Gambling Awareness  Education Program

Our Gambling Awareness Program is an early intervention initiative designed for young people aged 16–18. The course raises awareness about gambling-related risks, promotes informed decision-making, and equips students with critical thinking, emotional regulation, and financial literacy skills to prevent harm.

This evidence-informed program is aligned with health and wellbeing outcomes in the Australian Curriculum and is delivered through engaging, age-appropriate content.

 

Module 1: Understanding Gambling

  • What is gambling?
  • Different types of gambling (pokies, sports betting, online gaming)
  • The odds and how "the house always wins"
  • Recognising gambling advertising and industry tactics

 

Module 2: The Psychology of Gambling

  • How gambling affects the brain (dopamine, addiction) 
  • Myths vs. facts about luck, skill, and chance 
  • The illusion of control and chasing losses 
  • Emotional triggers and risky behaviours

 

Module 3: Gambling in Gaming

  • Loot boxes, microtransactions, and in-game betting
  • Gambling-like mechanics in popular online games
  • How gaming can lead to gambling 
  • Setting healthy boundaries with technology

 

Module 4: Social, Cultural & Peer Influences

  • Peer pressure and social gambling
  • Gambling in cultural contexts (family, community norms)
  • Media portrayal and glamorisation of gambling
  • Challenging attitudes and breaking the stigma

 

 

Module 5: Financial Literacy & Risk Awareness

  • Budgeting and understanding money
  • The real cost of gambling losses
  • Spotting warning signs of financial stress 
  • Long-term impact on work, study, and relationships
